Job description

Job Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Tax Lawyer to join our legal team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in tax law and will be responsible for providing expert legal advice to clients on various tax-related matters, including compliance, planning, and dispute resolution. The Tax Lawyer will work closely with clients to understand their financial goals and develop strategies that minimize tax liabilities while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Tax Planning and Advisory:

    • Provide expert legal advice and counsel to clients on a wide range of tax issues, including income tax, estate tax, international tax, and corporate tax matters.
    • Develop and implement tax-efficient strategies and structures for clients, considering their financial goals and objectives.
    • Assist clients with tax planning, including mergers and acquisitions, investments, estate planning, and business restructuring.
  2. Compliance and Documentation:

    • Ensure clients comply with all federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
    • Prepare, review, and file tax returns, reports, and other necessary documents on behalf of clients.
    • Conduct thorough research on tax laws, regulations, and case laws to provide accurate and up-to-date advice.
  3. Tax Dispute Resolution:

    • Represent clients in tax disputes with governmental agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state tax authorities.
    • Prepare and present cases in administrative hearings, appeals, and litigation related to tax controversies.
    • Negotiate settlements and agreements with tax authorities on behalf of clients.
  4. Client Representation and Advocacy:

    • Advocate on behalf of clients in matters of tax audits, assessments, and investigations.
    • Develop strong arguments and defence strategies to protect clients' interests in tax disputes.
    • Provide support and representation in court proceedings, if necessary.
  5. Regulatory and Legislative Monitoring:

    • Stay current with changes in tax laws, regulations, and industry trends that may impact clients.
    • Monitor legislative developments and provide guidance on potential effects on client activities.
    • Advise clients on tax risk management and compliance strategies in light of new laws and regulations.
  6. Collaboration and Coordination:

    • Work closely with other lawyers, accountants, financial planners, and advisors to provide comprehensive tax advice and solutions.
    • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure seamless service delivery to clients.
    • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the state bar and in good standing.
  • At least 3 years of experience practising tax law, with a strong background in both corporate and individual tax matters.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle complex tax issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts clearly to clients.
  • Proficiency in using legal research tools and tax software.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong client management skills and the ability to build and maintain client relationships.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) qualification is a plus.
