Job description

We are looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Computer Operator to join our team and oversee the daily operations of our computer systems and data centers. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in managing computer systems, performing system monitoring, and troubleshooting technical issues. As a Senior Computer Operator, you will ensure the reliability, performance, and security of our IT infrastructure, while providing leadership and guidance to junior operators. Your role will involve coordinating system operations, managing incident responses, and ensuring adherence to operational procedures and best practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. System Monitoring and Operation:

    • Oversee and monitor the operation of computer systems and data centers to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
    • Perform regular system checks and diagnostics to identify and address potential issues before they impact operations.
    • Manage batch jobs, system backups, and scheduled tasks to ensure timely completion and system availability.
  2. Incident Management and Troubleshooting:

    • Respond to and resolve system alerts, errors, and malfunctions in a timely manner to minimize downtime and service interruptions.
    • Analyze and diagnose technical issues, working with IT staff and vendors as needed to implement effective solutions.
    • Document incidents and resolutions, and maintain accurate logs for future reference and analysis.
  3. System Maintenance and Upgrades:

    • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including applying patches, updates, and configuration changes to systems and software.
    • Coordinate and execute system upgrades and enhancements, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
    • Monitor system performance and make recommendations for improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability.
  4. Leadership and Training:

    • Provide guidance and support to junior computer operators and IT staff, including training on operational procedures and best practices.
    • Lead and participate in shift handovers, ensuring seamless transitions and continuity of operations.
    • Develop and maintain operational documentation, including procedures, checklists, and manuals.
  5. Security and Compliance:

    • Ensure that all system operations adhere to security policies, procedures, and best practices to protect organizational data and assets.
    • Monitor and manage user access controls, system permissions, and data security measures.
    • Assist with compliance audits and ensure that systems meet regulatory and organizational standards.
  6. Collaboration and Communication:

    • Collaborate with IT teams, vendors, and other stakeholders to coordinate system changes, upgrades, and troubleshooting efforts.
    • Communicate effectively with management and other departments to provide updates on system status, incidents, and resolutions.
    • Participate in meetings and contribute to discussions on IT strategy, system improvements, and operational efficiency.
  7. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of system configurations, processes, and procedures.
    • Generate and review operational reports, including system performance metrics, incident logs, and maintenance activities.
    • Provide regular status reports and updates to management on system operations and performance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in computer operations, system administration, or a related role, with a proven track record of managing and maintaining computer systems.
  • Strong knowledge of operating systems (e.g., Windows, Linux, Unix) and data center operations.
  • Experience with system monitoring tools and batch job scheduling software.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and diagnosing system issues and a strong understanding of networking concepts.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with IT teams and other stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with IT security practices and regulatory compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware).
  • Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) for automation and system management.
  • Relevant certifications such as CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, or Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA).
  • Experience with ITIL or other IT service management frameworks.
